CORD Workshop: STEM Transitions and Contextual Learning
The Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD) will present a workshop to faculty/staff on the topics STEM Transitions and Contextual Learning. CORD is an organization that provides curriculum development services and professional development programs. They are going to present on STEM Transitions, a project which they had previously funded by the Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Ed, and conducted through a cooperative agreement with the League for Innovation in the Community College. This project included career clusters on Health Science, Information Technology, Manufacturing, TDL (transportation, distribution and logistics), STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and agriculture, food and natural resources. Our career (Process Tech, Child Development, and Business) and adult educational faculty will team up with STEM faculty for this part of the presentation. STEM Transitions focuses on enhancing mathematics and science rigor through evidence-based curriculum projects. The second portion of the presentation deals with contextual learning. Contextual learning theory focuses on multiple aspects of the learning environment, whether inside or outside of the classroom. It helps educators design learning environments that incorporate all facets of ones experiences (social, cultural, physical and psychological) in order to achieve the desired outcomes.
