We will be holding open-hours for The STEM Center for Teaching and Learning all week for drop-in Blackboard or Technology help, Instructional Design support, or to use for collaboration or personal work space. You may bring your own laptops, or laptops are available to use in the center. |

Training: Blackboard Basics
Monday January 13 @ 2:30-3:30pm, Room 3307 Are you new to Blackboard? Or are you interested in learning new ways to present content and utilize Blackboard effectively? The Blackboard Basics workshop is a hands-on session intended to introduce you to Blackboard, provide you with the essential skills to fulfill the Blackboard requirements, review the most common tools, and to identify best practices. Objectives: At the end of this training you will be able to log into Blackboard, personalize your homepage, manage your courses, upload your syllabus, make your course available, add various content items (including announcements, text, files, links, media), understand the various options when posting content, and be able to identify the most commonly used tools. Intended Audience: New faculty and staff, Faculty and staff new to Blackboard, or those who would like a refresher on the required Blackboard uses (uploading your syllabus and making your course available). Prerequisite: none. This is an introductory training applicable to all instructor levels. Agenda

Wednesday January 15 @ 2:00-5:00pm, Room 3307 To facilitate faculty collaborations for paired Learning Communities, the STEM Center for Teaching and Learning, Room 3307 has been reserved on a monthly basis (every 3rd Wednesday) throughout the entire semester, beginning on Wednesday, January 15 through Wednesday April 16, 2014. In order to derive the greatest benefit from your Learning Community experience, the STEM CTL encourages each Learning Community faculty to utilize this time for curriculum alignment and to plan the integration of your lessons and activities. |

Brown Bag Series: Ted Talks: Facilitating Educational Innovation Through Ideas and Discourse - M.C. Carr
Wednesday January 22 @ 2:30-3:30pm, Room 3307 As part of the efforts to bring intellectual life and discourse to the faculty and staff, Professor Carr will host a series on Ted Talks. It is an opportunity to facilitate innovation through ideas and discourse. When we enrich ourselves personally, we also collaborate professionally, and integrate that knowledge in the classroom. The conclusion of each Ted Talk event can close the information loop among professionals. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. |

A discussion of the characteristics of today’s students will help participants understand why many students lack effective learning strategies when they enroll in college, and how simple it is to teach them strategies for successful learning. Reflection and think-pair-share activities will introduce participants to cognitive science research-based methods that can be used to improve teaching and learning. It is an opportunity to facilitate innovation through ideas and discourse. When we enrich ourselves personally, we also collaborate professionally, and integrate that knowledge in the classroom. The conclusion of each Ted Talk event can close the information loop among professionals. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. |
