The Dean's Corner - February Issue
Despite the brutal weather start to the semester, I trust that your classes are going well. To assist you with the days of missed instruction, the technology team of the STEM CTL will offer unique strategies such as voice narrated PowerPoint lectures to provide students with the missing work. In addition to this effort, the technology staff will be launching a technology campaign to ensure that we are addressing the needs of all our faculty and staff. They will be requesting a visit to your department meetings at a designated time to meet each of you.
The WAC Brown Bag Workshop will be re-scheduled due to the weather. The CATs Brown Bag Workshop is canceled for Tuesday, February 11th and rescheduled for Friday, February 14th at 10 am in room 3307. I am now a member of the CCC Institutional Review Board (IRB) and our first required meeting is Tuesday, February 11th. There is no conflict with the CATs workshop for the rest of the semester. Remember, the assignment is Chapter 7.

Currently, I am away at the Research Summit on Teaching and Learning in Kennesaw, GA. There are some very interesting sessions, including “Flip and Slip”. Stay tuned.

TED Talks Discussions Spurred Lively Debate Between Faculty and Students
On January 22, 2014, Art Professor M. Carr facilitated the first monthly TED Talk Discussion around the Talk titled "John Bohannon: Dance vs. Powerpoint, a Modest Proposal". Middle College Instructor, Brian Roach, brought 15 of his students to engage in the conversation with 15 Olive-Harvey Faculty and Staff.
The TED Talk demonstrated engaging the use of dance to explain difficult scientififc concepts in microbiology. Many of the faculty were intrigued by the use of interdisciplinary measures to help students make correlations. Faculty saw the need for integration of different methods for instruction other than powerpoint, however, were unsure how to effectively integrate such things. The students were very engaged in the conversation that the TED talks sparked. Students said it was important for their instructors to finding alternative and creative ways that allowed students to become active learners. And that employing some of those strategies would be highly effective for them becoming more engaged and to best facilitate their learning.

A district-wide effort is currently underway to identify and support the way Learning Communities are implemented throughout the City Colleges of Chicago. Past enrollment and retention data along with an analysis of course scheduling and degree requirements are just some of the metrics that will be used to pair learning community courses.
Faculty support is needed for continuous improvement of this best practice. Please consult with your colleagues and submit your Learning Community ideas to Helen Y. West at email@example.com.
The STEM Center for Teaching and Learning (Room 3307) has been reserved from 2 pm to 5 pm, on the 3rd Wednesday of every month through May 10, 2014, for collaborations between Learning Community faculty. Faculty members who co-teach in a learning community will have the opportunity to integrate and align their lessons to help students make relevant connections between the respective disciplines.
Also, surveys have been administered to students enrolled in Learning Communities during Spring 2014. Our efforts implementing Learning Communities are more intentional and focused on successful implementation. Accordingly, we are using data to drive future implementation. To support this effort, three student surveys are planned during the semester, as follows:
1. Pre-participation Surveys - 1st & 2nd week of school to assess student awareness and expectations.
2. Mid-semester Surveys - To assess student satisfactions, concerns or discontents.
3. End of Semester Surveys - To assess student outcomes, success and retention
The STEM CTL has also scheduled two Learning Community workshops for Wednesday, February 12th from 2 pm - 4 pm, and Thursday, February 13th from 3 pm - 5 pm.
The Olive-Harvey College STEM Club Robotics Team finished in 3rd Place at the Vex-U Robotics Competition at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. This was a major win for our students who worked diligently to prepare for the competition against experienced 4 year university robotics teams.
Olive-Harvey College is the first two year community college to compete in the competition, and they were the first to compete from a Chicago area college.

Proposal Accepted for the International Supplemental Instruction Conference in 2014, Chicago IL
Congratulations to Professor Cornelia Forrester, Elissa Tobin, and Dr. Vera Fullard on receiving their acceptance to present at the International Conference on Supplemental Instruction in Chicago, Illinois May 23-25, 2014.
We are also proud to announce that two student SI Leaders (Cyntkaille Coleman and Katrina Randle) will join the presenting team and will provide the student perspective of our SI Program at the conference. Additional attendees of the conference include Professor Kaife Abedin, and Professor Rosie Inwang.
“Survival of SI at a 2-year Commuter College”
The presenters (Olive-Harvey College) will provide insight into the reality of implementing a Supplemental Instruction program into a 2-year predominantly black commuter college with a distinct population of under-prepared students. The session will focus on both the lessons learned, and the best practices employed to create a successful and sustainable SI program.
