Manager, Instructional Design
The STEM Center for Teaching and Learning introduces and welcomes Helen Y. West as the newest member of our growing team. Helen accepted our offer of employment as Manager, Instructional Design and began her new position on April 23, 2013.
Helen had over 20 years of management experience in increasingly responsible roles with Lucent Technologies before she reinvented herself and transitioned into the field of education. In support of her personal “reinvention strategy”, she enrolled as a student in two concurrent graduate degree programs and completed both of them, earning Master’s degrees in Educational Technology, and Educational Leadership. She is also currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program majoring in Instructional Design.
In her most recent position prior to joining Olive-Harvey College, Helen was the STEM Program Manager at Corliss Early College STEM High School.
As Manager, Instructional Design, Helen is responsible for the overall development of professional development and training support for faculty and staff. She defines Instructional Design as a process, discipline, and a science of detailed analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of instruction that represents a guideline for desired performance and outcomes.
Working in collaboration with the Technology Integration Specialist, they will utilize Educational Technology solutions for the new STEM Center for Teaching and Learning. Her office is located in Room 3314 and she can be reached on Ext. 6470.

Summer Bridge Programs
There are many benefits for students who participate in these programs. Specifically, students will benefit from the reinforcement of concepts previously taught. In addition, students can benefit by placing into college level coursework without the expense of remediation classes that are not credited toward their degree program, and it will give students an edge and help prepare them by keeping their minds sharp and focused.
An orientation and registration workshop will be held June 19, 2013 at Olive-Harvey College in the Bruce Cherry Theater from 4 pm – 6 pm for parents and students to answer any questions they might have. Refreshments will also be served.
Level UP is a free 6 week summer bridge program for incoming freshmen at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC). The program prepares students for college- level coursework in both Math and English and what it takes to be successful in college. The primary goal of Level UP is to have more first-year
college students begin their fall semester at CCC with fewer pre-college level requirements, and
therefore, a much better chance of college success.
Level UP will run at Olive-Harvey College from June 24 to August 2.

Race to the Top
Race to the Top Summer Bridge is a free "math only" intervention which seeks to enhance the preparedness of rising high school juniors and seniors in mathematics. This 6 week tuition-free program focuses on math tools and concepts needed to advance to college credit classes. Students will receive instruction from highly qualified, supportive math faculty in an environment which fosters active student learning. The goal of the program is to reduce remediation by diagnosing college readiness through targeted intervention.

1. The Retention Center (replaces Early Alert)
The Retention Center provides an easy way for you to discover which students in your course are at risk. Based on preconfigured rules and rules you create, students’ engagement and participation are visually displayed, quickly alerting you to potential risk. From the Retention Center, you can communicate with struggling students and help them take immediate action for improvement.
2. The New Calendar
The Calendar in Blackboard Learn has been significantly enhanced:
Instructors can use the calendar course tool as a primary way of managing and communicating the schedule of events and assignments in the course. Calendar supports due dates, if set, for gradable items. Clicking on calendar items allows an instructor to view or edit the item, or grade attempts on the associated item.
Students can use filtering options to selectively view only course level items. They can then click on an item to view item details, and if supported, create an attempt against the item.
3. Inline Grading
Instructors can view student-submitted files “inline,” meaning in the web browser, without requiring any plug-ins, applets, or client-side applications. Additionally, annotations tools are available as part of the inline viewer, enabling Instructors to provide feedback – comments, highlights, and even drawing/annotation – directly on the inline view of the document.
4. Global Navigation & My Blackboard
Global Navigation is the new menu is available all the time in the top right corner of the Learn interface and provides one-click access to your Courses, Organizations, Settings, Blackboard Help, and the new My Blackboard tools. With this new Global Navigation menu, you can access everything you need quickly and easily, from wherever you are in the Blackboard Learn platform.
My Blackboard aggregates information from across the Blackboard Learn system for users. Users access My Blackboard using the new Global Navigation Menu at the top of the screen. My Blackboard has a navigation panel that quickly connects to the new My Blackboard tools - Profile, Updates, People, and Posts - as well as courses, organizations, and settings. The tools users have access to depend on whether Blackboard Cloud Settings are enabled, and whether the institution licenses Community Engagement capabilities.
5. Collaborate Web Conferencing / Instant Messaging / Voice Authoring
Instant Messaging: Formerly Wimba Pronto, Blackboard Collaborate enterprise instant messaging capabilities, or Blackboard IM, allow your academic institution to create a learning network for office hours, school services, meetings, and desktop video conferencing—all initiated through presence and instant messaging.
Voice Authoring: Blackboard Collaborate voice authoring capabilities incorporate threaded voice boards, voice-enabled email, and embedded voice within course pages, as well as live group discussions and debates. Increase the interaction and student engagement for any online course.

CORD Workshop: STEM Transitions and Contextual Learning
On April 19th 2013, The Center for Occupational Research and Development lead Olive-Harvey faculty in a workshop on Contextual Learning to help educators design learning environments that incorporate all facets of ones experiences (social, cultural, physical and psychological) in order to acheive the desired outcomes.

Learning Communities Workshop
Jacque Mott, Learning Communities National Fellow
On April 26th 2013, Jacque Mott provided an all-day workshop on the theory and practice of learning communities. Participants received hands-on training and a tool-kit for developing creative and effective learning communities.
